Key scratches, rock chips, and scuffs repaired before they turn into rust. Light scratches buff out. Deeper ones get filled, primed, and refinished so the panel looks clean again.
Scratch and chip repair depends on how deep the damage goes. A scratch that only marks the clear coat can be sanded and polished out. A scratch through the color coat needs to be filled, primed, and repainted, then blended so the repair doesn't show. Rock chips on the hood and front bumper get cleaned out, filled, and touched in or refinished depending on how many there are. Key scratches that run the length of a panel usually mean refinishing the whole panel.
Any scratch or chip that reaches bare metal is an open door for rust, and near the Florida coast the salt air speeds that up considerably. A chip the size of a pencil eraser can grow into a rust bubble the size of your palm within a couple of years. Fixing it early is a small job; fixing rust-through later means cutting metal.
Run a fingernail across the scratch. If it catches, the scratch is through the clear and worth repairing properly. Also come in when chips show any orange discoloration, which means rust has already started, or when accumulated road rash on the hood bothers you enough to want the panel refinished.
